Arg, I need to learn how to colour.
Like reeeeally badly :(
Those are all things that bothered me too. :(
About Renee, Williams commented somewhere that the photos were officers who earned some kind of commendation. So she’s not dead! (here’s the source for that)
I didn’t like the way Kate treated Bette. I get that it’s a military thing, but Bette is her cousin, and she’s been a professional athlete and amateur crimefighter since she was like twelve. And it seems like a bad idea to take away her costume with bulletproof armor and night vision goggles and replace it with a baggy sweat suit, but maybe it was a bulletproof sweat suit, I don’t know.
I didn’t quite dislike Kate, but I didn’t like her, either, and I really want to like her. I think maybe the long wait and seeing it previewed over and over again dampened my enthusiasm. Maybe issue 2 will be more exciting.
Thanks for the link - that’s something of a relief!
I’m kind of hoping that this issue was showcasing the worst of Kate, and that we’ll get to see the best of her pretty soon. And yeah, the long wait had the effect for me of really building up my expectations, so maybe if they’re a little more grounded I’ll enjoy the next issue more. We’ll see.
First of all, remember when DC was doing that teaser, months and months ago, of “Who is this woman and why is she crying?” The woman finally appeared this week, in Batwoman.
Here is how Batwoman makes me feel: worried.
Worried, first of all, about Renee. Some people have already floated the idea that she might be dead - I don’t think there’s enough to go on to say either way. Kate seems to be visibly upset about her, but Maggie, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to feel the need to say anything about her despite knowing that she and Kate dated. So perhaps she’s gone somewhere and Kate misses her. Perhaps Kate knows or thinks she’s dead and Maggie doesn’t. Perhaps the fact that this new villain is Spanish-speaking is going to come back to Renee.
And, hell, I’m also worried that the fact that Renee, dead-or-alive, was brought up right in the first book, means that we’re still getting the whole Renee and Kate as star-crossed lovers fuckery. Let them move on, DC.
I’m worried about Bette. She’s been treated like a nuisance by DC since the very beginning, and now she has Kate doing just that, while also robbing her of the identity she chose herself. It’s a very militaristic take on their relationship - think of any army film where the sergeant is telling new recruits they’re maggots and their names are mud - but you know what? I hate those films.
I’m worried about Kate, too. I liked the way her relationship with her father was portrayed before, with mutual love and respect but plenty of old wounds and poor communication. This new out-and-out hate is a lot darker, and honestly, less interesting.
And here is my biggest worry: I’m worried that I’m just not going to like Kate. This week she was pushing all my buttons in the worst kind of way, and however much I want Batwoman to be successful, I’m not going to read a comic that makes me feel this upset and uncomfortable.
The art is, of course, stunning, but I don’t know if it suits this new story as much as it did the one that ran in Detective Comics. I sometimes find Williams’ layouts a little hard to follow, which doesn’t help.
No, Batwoman isn’t bad! But it is looking like it’s not going to be to my taste, which is sad.
Babby’s first gif.
Working on the second one now.
Guys I love Batwoman so much you have no idea (okay maybe you do).
WHAAAT. This is so cool. SO COOL!
I really do not like Maggie and Kate hooking up. But Cameron Chase is appearing. This is a good thing.

I think Maggie and Kate hooking up is fantastic. At the very least, it means that Kate/Renee will stop being played as some tragic destined romance, which belittles Renee’s relationship with Dee and also limits the number of seriously relationships which the narrative will allow each of them to have.
It would have been nice for DC to give us more, new, queer women, but at least it means one of the queer ladies they already have is getting more page time.
NGL, this was pretty much the reason I got out of bed this morning.
I wonder if, in a DC-supported slash comic, Hal/Barry would still be the most boring slash pairing of all time? I suspect the answer is yes.
Also: I wish Kate/Renee had been switched out for a non-canon queer lady pairing, since all the other couples are fan-favourites that haven’t been acknowledged as canon. But you can’t have everything, I guess.
